New skills, new ships

by Jar Calhoun on Jul.24, 2008, under EVE Online, Mining

Having graduated from my Navitas that allowed me to make a living, I have been using a Vexor class Gallente cruiser to help with mining. Jet can mining however is relatively risky with pirates lurking to attempt thievery and trick CONCORD into blasting me out of the sky.

Since joining my new corporation, I have found a kindred group of fellow miners who advise me that Halada’s guide to mining is a must read. I manage to procure a copy and have decided that with my mining skills, I shall train towards exhumers – the great mining ship, Hulk. Before that, mining barge is a relatively quick train and I find myself in a Retriever which offers an even better mining yield than my cruiser. This allows me to quickly contribute to the corporations mining ops in a relatively quiet system in Genesis.

Joining a corporation

by Jar Calhoun on Jul.04, 2008, under Corporation, EVE Online

After a few weeks as a freelance pilot in Verge Vendor enjoying some peace and quiet mining, I get a conversation request as I make my way through one of the trade hubs. By this time, I have also picked up on the great habit of putting buy and sell orders on the open market to get items I need while using the buy low / sell high principle to earn some more ISK (EVE’s currency) to keep up with my growing ship collection.

Amarr Frigate - Executioner

TransGalactic Industries is apparently recruiting and wanted to know if I would be interested to join them. Declining politely, I told the recruiter that I would consider his offer but thought that it would probably be easier to solo out here for awhile skilling up before I considered joining them.

An incident soon after with a pirate in my home system causes me to re-think this. Using a well known technque of can-flipping, the pirate steals from my can of ore and places it into his own can. Hoping that I will make a fatal mistake of taking back my ore, he hopes to get aggression and thereby allowing him free rights to shoot me. Luckily I was already wise to this tactic and decide to let the local pilots know and dock up. This however ruins a good night of mining and I thought that maybe a group of people would have better luck.

Stargate Activation

I’m soon talking to the recruiter who spoke to me earlier who turns out to the CEO of the corp! After letting him know my intentions to join them, I start packing my few ships together to make way for a new base near Genesis region.

Industrials and Freighters – moving cargo through the heavens

by Jar Calhoun on Jul.01, 2008, under EVE Online

Embarking on a mining career means that I now have a lot of ore to move. With sub-par refining skills, I’ve managed to quickly focus on an interesting ore not found in Gallente space called Kernite. Apparently a lot of capsuleers need them to complete missions with their agents.

After doing some research, I’ve decided that the Amarr Bestower is probably my best bet without a long training time.

In comparison, the Gallente Iteron Mark V requires a long training time but the benefits are that it can hold an entire jet can! The little Iteron Mark I is shown flying beside it.

One of the behemoths of the sky when it comes to hauling is the freighter class of ships. Slow moving, they haul up to 950k m^3 of items compared to the 30k m^3 of most industrials and transport ships. The sleek smooth lines of the Amarr Providence gives me pause as I pass by it ambling towards a stargate.
